Now-a-days it is hard to find a movie with a different kind of story to tell so when I find one I tend to appreciate it.
The 2020 film Joseph does just that. A young, Jamaican Doctor confused between how he was raised and the beliefs of his African Ancestors told to him through stories by his grandfather, struggles to navigate through life while dealing with loss, pain, betrayal and a strong, relatable feeling of having a purpose to fulfill but not knowing what it is. This movie tells a story of a man at constant odds with his family who decides to honor his best friend and his roots by travelling back to his homeland of Ghana to discover himself. Whilst there, Joseph finds love, acceptance, community, a sense of family and he creates his own legacy.
I truly enjoyed this movie. It has a great storyline, a powerful message and a strong ending. Though at times it did lack the ability to make you feel it, the acting was good and I was impressed. The way they captured and portrayed the different cultures was amazing and beautiful. The cinematography was gorgeous. There were some random characters that really served no purpose to the storyline but overall I would definitely recommend adding this movie to your watchlist for a rainy day.
